MOD initiative shortlisted at Times Higher Education Awards

“The feedback we’ve had has been really positive and we hope that we can continue to grow our relationship with the MOD to offer these courses to even more armed forces personnel in the future.”

Lesley Allen, Armed Forces Programme Manager

A series of educational programmes specifically tailored to the armed forces has been shortlisted at a prestigious awards ceremony.

The Outstanding Employer Engagement Initiative is one of 18 categories at the 2014 Times Higher Education Awards, now in its tenth year and a glittering celebration of the best of the sector.

Staffordshire University's entry into the category recognises the close working relationship with the Ministry of Defence as one of only six ‘approved’ providers of the MOD University Programme.

The courses provide flexible study for service personnel that facilitates career enhancement through recognised qualifications. These qualifications are undertaken during their military service to prepare them for a further career when individuals leave the forces.

Lesley Allen, who manages the Armed Forces Programmes for the University, said: “We’ve had an overwhelming response to the programmes and are able to offer a huge variety of educational courses to meet their requirements.

“The feedback we’ve had has been really positive and we hope that we can continue to grow our relationship with the MOD to offer these courses to even more armed forces personnel in the future.”

The award will recognise a strategic and innovative approach to delivering employers’ workforce development needs. Judges will look for examples of new ways of working with employers, evidence of high-quality, flexible provision, responsive to employer and employee needs and evidence of positive impact on businesses.

This will be the second successive year that the University has been shortlisted in the same category. Last year’s nomination recognised the close work with a wide range of employers including Serco Justice, Staffordshire County Council, North Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Knights Solicitors and Howdens Joinery.

The winners will be announced on Thursday November 27 at the awards night held at the Grosvenor Hotel, London.
