Overseas students embrace Staffordshire's heritage

"They teach you to be a leader, not a boss. That’s something in modern management that is essential.”

Hans Ramon Schuischel, BA (Hons) Toursim Management

Overseas students Vega and Hans embraced Staffordshire's heritage whilst studying tourism at Staffordshire University and found true love along the way.

Vega Sanchez and Hans Ramon Schuischel, both from Spain, came to the University to study the top-up BA (Hons) Tourism Management course.

Hans said: “I'm originally from Germany so I had my good German and good Spanish but I needed my English. To go abroad and study Tourism especially in England was the perfect place.”

After being welcomed by the International Student Service team the pair soon settled into University life and love blossomed.

“At the beginning you are nervous but you meet a lot of people from different parts of the world. You come into contact with lots of different cultures and learn from everyone.” explained Vega.

Hans added: “We met the first day. At the start it wasn't like 'whoa that's my girl' but we spent lots of time together and then fell really in love. For me she's the love of my life.”

Vega took a work placement with a local wine company and Hans got a taste of Stoke's history working at Middleport Pottery.

He said: “At the beginning because I'm not from here I didn’t know much about it but from the day I started I became comfortable and they really supported me at the pottery. It was a great experience”

Thanks to their experience on the course, Vega and Hans have both secured jobs on hotel management schemes in Majorca.

“Without a degree you can't be a hotel manager. You need all the experience - you need to know how to treat people. They teach you to be a leader, not a boss. That’s something in modern management that is essential.” said Hans.

The couple's families met for the first time on their graduation day. Hans said: “My parents are German, her parents are Spanish so they are from different cultures but they really laughed together and it's been great.”

“We've come together at Staffordshire University as a new family for the future so it's really good."
