Political commentator Owen Jones visits Staffordshire University

“As an active political campaigner and columnist, Owen's experience and advice will be invaluable for our students and show how they can apply their studies in the real world to make a practical difference.”

Author, political commentator and campaigner Owen Jones will take up a two day residency at Staffordshire University next week to engage with students, academics and the wider public.

Owen is returning to the University after receiving an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of his trajectory career as an award winning writer and a champion of social justice.

This follows the success of the University's first residency by journalist and political strategist Alastair Campbell in November.

In a packed programme, Owen, the author of Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class and The Establishment: And How They Get  Away  with It, will deliver workshops and talks to students across a range of courses in the School of Social Work, Allied and Public Health and School of Journalism, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Owen will also visit the Students' Union Food Bank and deliver a public lecture, Politics of Hope, on Monday evening.

Richard Machin, Course Leader for Social Welfare Law, Policy and Advice Practice, said: “I'm thrilled to welcome Owen back to the University to work with our students and stretch their thinking. When Owen accepted his Honorary Doctorate in the summer, his rousing speech made a huge impression on our graduates and I'm sure his passion will inspire staff and students once again.”

“As an active political campaigner and columnist, Owen's experience and advice will be invaluable for our students and show how they can apply their studies in the real world to make a practical difference.”

The residency initiative is backed by Stoke-on-Trent Central MP Tristram Hunt. He said: “Staffordshire University's residencies are a new and innovative programme of engagement with students that bring guest lecturers to not only speak to students, but to engage and inspire them through mentoring, career advice and encouragement to pursue careers in their chosen field. I look forward to seeing this programme going from strength to strength as it plays a leading role in Staffordshire University's exciting and vibrant plans for the future.”

“I was honoured to be asked to deliver a public lecture in 2015 and I know Owen will be an exciting, engaging and thought-provoking speaker.”

Although the public lecture is fully booked, Owen will take part in a 15 minute live Q&A on Twitter on Tuesday 23rd February between 4pm-5pm and members of the public can submit questions for consideration beforehand using the hashtag #OwenInResidence.
