Textile Surfaces and Surface Pattern Design students have scooped top prizes at the New Designers exhibition in London.

Final Year Surface Pattern Design students Faye Jones and Nicky Chan took home two of the sponsored awards from the exhibition that recognises emerging talent in the design industry.

Faye Jones won the Johnsons Tiles Award Associate Prize. She first caught the attention of Johnsons Tiles representatives at the Staffordshire University’s graduate art exhibition 'Show & Tell'. The award comes with £500 prize money and a two-week work placement in Design Studio.
Faye, 31, Eccleshall, said: “I'm overwhelmed at the standard of work here and I've enjoyed every moment of the exhibition. I've always loved Johnson’s Tiles, their designs are beautiful.”

Nicky Chan was awarded the Peroni Award for best design for a glass. She took home £500 of art materials and her hand painted glass will be on display at the Peroni head office.
Nicky, 22, Stoke-on-Trent, said: “It's been a great experience to take part in such a big competition. So many universities exhibit here and it can be hard to get noticed, when you get good feedback and recognition it feels amazing.

“I entered the Peroni competition with a last minute design and I can't believe that I won. It's the best feeling.”

Sponsors of the event recognised several other students from the University by presenting them with the Dulux Loves, John Lewis Loves, Moonpig Loves and Hallmark Talented accolades.

Elizabeth Kealy-Morris, Head of Art and Design at Staffordshire University said: "As the newly appointed Head of Art and Design it's great to see our newly graduating students flourish at New Designers again this year.

“We have a track record of being recognised by industry for the calibre of our graduates. The courses prepare our students well for work and this is evidenced by the range of companies visiting our stand and the awards being won.

“I am so proud of our students' achievements this year, what a way to complete my first month at Staffordshire University, I feel very lucky indeed!"
