Stoke Con Trent returns to campus

"We offer the only comic arts course in the country so it makes perfect sense to hold Stoke Con Trent here. The previous conventions have been fantastic with cosplayers and fans attending from all over the country."

Adrian Tooth, Senior Lecturer in Cartoon and Comic Arts

Cartoon and Comic Arts students will be showcasing their artwork to hundreds of people this weekend as Staffordshire University welcomes back Stoke Con Trent for the third time.

Around 2,000 sci-fi and comic enthusiasts are expected to attend the convention being held at the University's Stoke campus on Sunday. The event will feature an array of guests from the world of film, television and graphic novels including the seventh Dr Who Sylvester McCoy and Darth Vader actor David Prowse.

Stoke Con Trent is the brain child of two Staffordshire University graduates Terry Bossons and Rob Ledgar who have teamed up with the University and senior lecturer in Cartoon and Comic Arts Adrian Tooth to organise the event.

Adrian said: “We offer the only comic arts course in the country so it makes perfect sense to hold Stoke Con Trent here. The previous conventions have been fantastic with cosplayers and fans attending from all over the country.

“We've got new features this time including Quasar and some great guests so it looks set to be a really fun day.”

The popular day out also includes exhibitors selling memorabilia, costumes and comics giving students from the University the chance to sell their own comic books whilst networking with industry professionals.

Graphic artists including Viz creator Simon Donald, Marvel and DC Comics illustrator Mike Hollins and John Haward whose work includes Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles will be on hand to offer advice. The trio will also be going into the University the day after to hold student workshops.

“These artists are really keen to mentor our students and give them an insight into being a professional comic book artist.” explained Adrian.

“Not only can they offer creative advice but they can teach the students about the business side of the industry which will be a real help when they graduate.”
