"I thoroughly enjoy my role within the psychology department and feel lucky to be involved in the student journey as they study with us at Staffordshire University."
Sarah Higgins, Technical Skills Specialist
A Psychology Technician has received a national award for her excellent contribution to teaching at Staffordshire University.
Sarah Higgins has been announced as joint winner of the Technical Support in Psychological Teaching Award from the British Psychology Society and the Association of Technical Staff in Psychology (ATSiP).
The award recognises Sarah's contributions to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, supporting staff research projects, her advanced technical skills knowledge as well as her interactions with prospective students at Open Days where she demonstrates the state-of-the-art equipment housed in the £30 million Science Centre.
Sarah said: “I am delighted to have accepted this award and would like to thank everyone involved in the nomination process. I thoroughly enjoy my role within the psychology department and feel lucky to be involved in the student journey as they study with us at Staffordshire University.
“It is a pleasure to deliver technical sessions and support student research projects. I find it rewarding to experience a student's confidence and expertise grow as they develop their practical-based skillset; especially when they have the opportunity to use the technical resources to bring the theory to life!”
Sarah's success follows that of fellow Technical Skills Specialist Paul Gallimore who was HEA Psychology Technician of the Year 2014.
Judy David, Academic Group Lead for Psychology and one of the team who nominated Sarah for the award, said: “The Psychology department is so proud of Sarah, and we feel very lucky indeed to have her in our Technical Team. The award is so richly deserved!”
“Sarah works incredibly hard in teaching and supporting students and helping them learn new skills and knowledge. We are delighted this has been recognised with this prestigious award. With two award winners now in our technical team, we know our students are getting the very best experience possible!”
Sarah has been invited to the BPS's Annual Conference in Brighton in May to receive her award.
