How Snapchat is making Clearing easier

"It was a bit strange to do Clearing on Snapchat but I'm very happy now as I've been worrying about it for weeks."

“It was easier than I thought it would be,” said Jess Warrellow – the first student to confirm a Staffordshire University place via Snapchat.

Jess, 18, from Trentham studied a BTEC in Health and Social Care at Newcastle College but has been having second thoughts about her choice of course when her results came back better than expected.

Yesterday, on the first day of Clearing, Staffordshire University was able to confirm via Snapchat that Jess had a place on its BSc (Hons) Animal Biology and Conservation degree course.

She said: “I've been thinking about it for a while but with my qualification, I thought I wasn't able to do it and that I'd have to do a Foundation Year.”

“It was a bit strange to do Clearing on Snapchat but I'm very happy now as I've been worrying about it for weeks. My family are pleased for me and I'm looking forward to starting in September.”

As part of its Clearing operations, offers of a University place – based on communicated grades – are also being made on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

This builds on the success of Staffordshire University digital and social media operations last year – where Facebook accommodation tours reached more than 25,000 people and results-day Twitter posts were viewed by 60,000.

Director of Marketing and PR, Georgina Kelly said: “As a digital University, it's vital we're engaging prospective students on the channels they’re using and this makes us so much more accessible to students like Jess.”

“Results and clearing can be a stressful time for families and Staffordshire University is keen to reassure students about their futures.”
