School of Justice, Security and Sustainability

I am a part-time lecturer within the Institute of Policing and have a background in policing, having completed the majority of a thirty-year career as an investigator at Detective Inspector and Detective Chief Inspector level, performing the role of Senior Investigating Officer (SIO), surveillance and technical support manager and operative, CHIS controller, national hostage negotiator and kidnap (Red Command) specialist. I am a qualified intelligence analyst.

It all started for me as a 16-year-old, joining Birmingham City Police Cadets and progressing into the Police service with West Midlands Police working in the inner-city areas of Birmingham, mainly on the CID as an investigator. I have extensive experience in covert and intelligence-led investigations throughout the UK and internationally working with foreign law enforcement agencies. I was the former head of the West Midlands surveillance unit and was seconded to the National Crime Squad (Now National Crime Agency) before completing my police service as head of the Intelligence and Covert Management Training Unit at the National Specialist Law Enforcement Centre at Wyboston, in Bedfordshire. (Now the College of Policing).

During my service I was responsible for investigations into organised crime, dealing with such crimes as kidnap and extortion, rape and prostitution, paedophilia, importation and distribution of multi-kilo class A drugs, firearms, facilitation of illegal persons into the UK, counterfeiting, murder and contract killings as well as investigations into local crime. I was lucky enough to work across Europe, Northern Ireland and Canada

I completed all levels of criminal investigation training from initial investigator to SIO including management of serious and linked crime, covert management courses and investigative interviewing instructor courses. I also undertook the Advanced Scientific Content Analysis Interrogation course (Phoenix, Arizona. I hold a BA (Hons) degree in Criminal Justice and Policing.

I have also undertaken security and operational reviews within police services and other public sector organisations; carried out research into specific areas of surveillance and intelligence activity and written national policies and guidance in relation to covert practices on behalf of ACPO.

Since retirement I have worked as a trainer and assessor with NPIA and the College of Policing, local forces including West Midlands, Warwickshire, West Mercia, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire Police and have delivered covert related training to every police service within the UK.

I joined Staffordshire University in June 2020, working within the Institute of Policing, specialising in intelligence management.

On a personal note, my uncle was a Detective Sergeant with BTP in Manchester, which is where my initial interest in the police was born. My sister, son-in-law, brother-in-law, and now my nephew have served or are serving in West Midlands Police. My daughter was a PCSO and is a supervisor in the police control centre. You might say that 'policing is in my genes'. In July 2022, I will have completed 50 years of working with Police Officers.
