James Williams

Senior Lecturer

School of Digital, Technologies and Arts

Having graduated from the University of Central Lancashire in 1982, I immediately began working in London as an advertising typographer, most notably with the highly regarded Collett Dickenson Pearce.

After four years I returned to general graphics, working at Michael Peters & Partners before moving to Manchester as a founding member of The Chase.

My work has been recognised in a number of national and international award schemes (now 26 in total), and in 1988 after a stringent selection process, I was elected membership to the New York Type Directors Club, USA and in 2013 I was awarded life membership.

But what I’m really proud of is the 20 years I worked with the prestigious London advertising creative awards, the Creative Circle, designing their award annuals and the 20 years I have been lecturing part-time at Staffordshire University.

Enterprise and commercial interests

Outside teaching, I continue to practice as typo/graphic designer and my book Type Matters! was published in April 2012 by Merrell Publishers. It has received positive reviews in the UK and USA and its design has been recognised in a number of award schemes. I also work very closely with a greeting card/letterpress studio who produce all their products by letterpress, a vintage printing process.
