Joanne Simmons

Technical Specialist (Sim & Clin Skills)

Technical Services

I work in Technical Services at Blackheath Lane as a Technical Assistant. My role is to provide assistance and support in student learning and teaching delivery within Paramedics, Midwifery, ODP and Nursing. At Blackheath Lane we have 8 permanent clinical skills labs, with the addition of 4 temporary labs to assist in clinical skills provision during the Covid-19 pandemic. As a Technical assistant I am responsible for ensuring all required equipment including high fidelity manikins, part task trainers, consumables etc are set-up for use in all clinical skills sessions, supporting and advising the academics on the use of the equipment and maintaining the equipment and supplies to ensure effective clinical skills sessions can take place.

Previous to my role in Technical Services as a Technical Assistant I worked in the NHS for 13 years. The first 4 years of which were spent working in Pharmacy at Stafford Hospital dispensing prescriptions, supplying wards etc followed by 9 years in Nuclear Medicine starting at Stafford Hospital then moving on to Royal Stoke Hospital. My main role in Nuclear medicine involved me using and controlling gamma cameras to obtain various scans and study data. Dealing with patients with a wide range of health issues and trying to ensure a comfortable and efficient visit to the department.
