Richard Banks

Lecturer

School of Digital, Technologies and Arts

I am a Lecturer in Games Technical Art across several disciplines including Game Art, CGI / VFX, animation, character rigging and coding.

After completing my degree in Sound Technology, my first job was in local radio as a Broadcast Assistant, I then progressed onto a variety of different jobs in the Audio Industry. During this time, I was spending more and more time creating mods for Unreal Tournament 2004 using the included UnrealEd toolkit.

After numerous maps, mods, characters, animations I decided to take this game development ‘hobby’ a little more seriously. The release of the Unity Game Engine in 2005 provided an excellent opportunity to really focus on turning my hobby into a serious career. I was fortunate enough to work on a variety of small indie projects throughout the years with friends and colleagues across Europe, primarily focusing on the more ‘techie’ aspects of game development. Honing my skills throughout the years, I found real joy in sharing my knowledge with others. I am a huge Houdini fan, and love to share its unique workflow with others; this led me to start sharing my tutorials online – to a surprising amount of success! This led me to be offered a guest lecture at UCLAN, talking to the game development students about my work, and working as an indie developer.

That was in 2015 – and I kept getting invited back. I had discovered my passion for teaching and have been a full time Lecturer ever since.
