A one year placement (also called an industrial placement, sandwich year or year in industry placement) is a structured employment programme offered by companies. You'll spend one academic year working for a company as a full-time, paid employee before returning to your studies. They are available across a broad range of job areas and industries.
What are the benefits?
- Gaining insight into a particular role or industry
- Using your skills in the real world – often a placement will allow you to work on a real life project that will benefit you and the company, putting your skills / knowledge into practice
- The job market is getting more and more competitive and your degree is not enough! The fact you have relevant experience will go a long way and look great on your CV
- A job offer? Some companies will offer a job to placement students for when they have finished their degree. If not you may have made some very useful contacts
- Earn some money
- You could explore a new city / country and make some new friends.
