We’ve already made changes, large and small, to help improve your University experience.  Take a look at some of our collective achievements since the last student surveys.

University-wide improvements

On Campus
Significant investments have been made across our campus buildings to improve learning spaces and access to the latest technologies for all students. This includes the SmartZone, Digital Kiln, motion-capture suites and the print bureau.

We’re upgrading our campus buildings and spaces with a new flagship building under construction to replace the Brindley building. Catalyst will help connect employers, students and apprentices from across the region and beyond and much more.


In The Cloud

More support for commuting students has been introduced through the Skills in your pocket webpage which makes it easy to access resources for students who are travelling to University regularly.

Access to online resources – with focus around off-campus access – have been simplified with improvements made to ‘single sign-on’ access.

Opportunities for all students to update their study skills before courses begin have been created through our study skills update and refresher sessions as part of the Flying Start welcome to University initiative.



Library resources have been increased to support wider reading through the introduction of free interlibrary loans.

The University Library Management Team and Students' Union have joined forces to collaborate more closely to ensure issues affecting students are high on the agenda.

Our Children’s Library has been created within the Thompson Library so that student parents can work at the computers adjacent to the area with children’s books and games.



One-to-one academic skills support can now be accessed remotely through Skype and other digital technologies with an easy to book appointment option.

Our very own Beacon was introduced in 2019 a further support and guide throughout your University experience. Beacon is a place where you can get answers to common questions, find out when your next lecture is, see campus maps, request important documents and more. Launched in 2019, Beacon provided over 25,000 instant answers 24/7 and completing over 5,000 self-service tasks in the first four months it was launched.



Shrewsbury and Stafford students are now directly involved in Welcome Week planning.

A multi-faith prayer room has been created in the Thompson Library in the Cadman building giving students a place on campus to pray 24/7.

Full menus for University bars, cafes, and restaurants are now available online (including information on allergies) to make them more accessible to all students.


How your feedback has improved aspects of our courses


We’ve paved the way for four hours of dedicated time in the high-spec SmartZone in Mellor with dual screen set up for mapping to ensure everyone has faster, better PC’s to run specialist GIS mapping.

To compensate for the loss of the LRC a new map room with maps and other resources for Geography students has been created.

Perceived variance in the quality of dissertation supervision has helped us develop a brand new programme of supervision for staff and students.


Graphic Design  & Illustration

Every Graphic Design student will now get the opportunity to take part in an International or UK based inspirational educational trip and we have more industry speakers and agency visits than ever.

We’ve made a dedicated studio space just for illustrators with an open plan environment to encourage collaboration, and investment in new technology has helped improve our print bureau.

We successfully bid, and were selected, to attend the Manchester Print Fair allowing you to showcase and sell your work.


Health & Social Care

As part of our school simulation strategy, we are investing in the new Centre for Health Innovation at our Centre for Excellence in Health Education, Stafford. A 12 month building project will deliver a state-of-the-art hub for healthcare skills, innovation, and research and development. The Centre will enable us to further increase the simulation and digital healthcare capabilities in the School of Health and Social Care. This new facility will be used by existing and future healthcare professionals to support their development of advanced clinical techniques.


Social Work

Building a strong learning community together is important to us all, which is why we’ve embedded elements of vertical teaching into our courses meaning we now co-teach across our department allowing students opportunities to work with people on other courses.



Creating opportunities for level 5 and 6 students to meet through social events ahead of working together on their option modules.

We now have a ‘free at the point of request’ document delivery service (previously known as inter-library loans) to ensure everyone has access to increased library resources to support wider-reading.

We’ve created briefings on the Erasmus exchange scheme to help students discover more opportunities beyond the University. 


Post-Graduate Researchers

Introduced new Teaching Policy in consultation with our PGRs, and free printing for those undertaking research responsibilities.

Cadman loft made available exclusively to PGRs to supplement school space resource, and to accommodate the need for extra storage space, lockable cupboards have been provided.

Graduate School revamped the Induction Programme to supplement Schools’ inductions with emphasis placed on sources of support and advice and guidance for pastoral issues as well as the management of the doctoral journey.

Additional development opportunities provided through online training through UEA, internal training for research staff and PGRs and, school seminars.


Staffordshire Business School

Our Business School has introduced peer mentoring, social events and opportunities for our students to gain micro-credentials to build a strong student and staff community. From Autumn 2021, our new state of the art home in the Catalyst Building will provide our students with access to digital technologies, employers and innovative learning spaces.

Our network of local and regional organisations has facilitated work experience opportunities for our students, including the development of our unique FdA Visitor Attraction and Resort Management course, which provides paid placements totalling 20-weeks for students at the Alton Towers Resort.
