Academic Leadership

The Academic Leaders Forum and Course Leaders Development Programme

Academic leadership is extremely important within the University as it is essential to delivering high-quality learning and teaching . We aim to ensure that all our academic leaders are equipped with the key leadership skills and knowledge to undertake their roles. Currently we have 2 main ways of doing this:

The Academic Leaders Forum

The forum meets at least 3 times a year, usually over lunch, and is coordinated by the Academic Development Unit. There is a specific theme for each of the forums, usually with an invited speaker, either internal or external to the University. This academic year the identified themes are listed and some have presentations attached.

  1. Managing Diversity - 28th September 2016 - Gurnham Singh (PDF, file size: 1.14MB)

  2. Careers Fest and Employability - 19th October 2016 - Peter Jackson

  3. Managing Finances - 9th November 2016 - Margaret Monkton

  4. Digital Transformation: Digital Leadership - 1st March 2017 - Khawar Hameed (PDF, file size: 1.34MB)

Course Leaders Development Programme

A new programme called; the Course Leaders Development programme is aimed at academics within Staffordshire University who are currently course leaders. It acknowledges that being a course leader needs to be put in the context of the changing landscape within Higher Education where student performance and metrics are vitally important. Indeed, what happens at course level is becoming increasingly important and the role of the course leader is critical to student satisfaction and success. To enable course leaders to feel supported in their roles within the new University structure, a blended programme of development has been introduced. This comprises of a) Leadership workshops b) Blackboard enabled information and tasks and c) Action-learning sets.

The course leaders are nominated for this programme by academic group leaders within departments. The flyer (PDF, file size: 62.55KB)  includes more information on the programme.
