Get to know the team

Hi, my name is Holly O’Rourke and I’m one of the Graduate Employability Consultants here at Staffordshire University.  I was a student here myself, studying the BSc Forensic Investigation and then the MSc Applied Research. I gained experience working within a HE setting while I was a student working as an Ambassador, a Mentor and as a Careers Coach which led to finding my passion in student development and support. I never knew that I wanted to become an Employability Consultant until I had gained experience as a Career Coach, which allowed me to find my strengths and reflect on how I could develop those into my own career.  So one thing I would recommend is to get as much experience as you can and to try new things, you never know, you may just find your passion along the way!

Hello! My name’s Rory Turnbull and I work as a Graduate Employability Consultant at Staffordshire University alongside the brilliant Vicky and Holly. I graduated from Leeds Trinity University in 2017 before spending 5 years in London working for a recruitment company, specialising in graduate-level recruitment – you could say I know a thing or two about what the market is like for you as graduates right now. Recent studies confirm the graduate market has never been busier! My advice is to get yourselves out there, network and show the world and future employers what you’re about. The demand for ambitious, proactive and driven graduates who are willing to learn is higher than ever!

Hi, I’m Vicky Cook and I have the pleasure of working with Rory and Holly as Graduate Employability Manager.  I discovered my passion for supporting people into work in my first job out of college at a Training Agency for the long term unemployed.  I’ve worked in HE careers at Staffordshire University since and am #ProudtobeStaffs!  I gained my Computing degree as a mature student and am a qualified career Coach and Strengths Practitioner and love working with our wonderfully diverse students and graduates here at Staffordshire University.  Our inclusive new Graduate Success Hub aims to support all our early career graduates to aspire to, and achieve, career success!

Top tips for recent graduates

  1. Be flexible and adaptable and don’t put all your eggs in one basket.  It’s much better to be in work than not:  you will develop your employability skills, build your professional network and have great things to put on your CV and talk about at interview.  We recommend that you have a few career plans on the go so that while you are aiming for the dream job you have other options to keep you going.  And remember, contrary to urban myth, there ARE jobs out there, in fact there are more graduate jobs at the moment than there have been for years!
  2. Be brave and don’t be afraid to network.  Depending on the industry you want to work in its estimated that up to 70% - 80% of vacancies are never publicly advertised!  These hidden jobs are recruited by word of mouth and head hunting.  A great way to access this hidden job market is to network and LinkedIn is a fantastic tool to use.  So, set up a LinkedIn profile (the Graduate Success Team can support you) and start to reach out to people in your field of interest. Ask them how they got into their role and what a typical day is like and tell them a bit about yourself.  See if they’d like to connect on LinkedIn.  Your network will grow and your chances of finding out about hidden jobs will increase.
  3. Be resilient.  Let’s face it, we’ve all become much more resilient after the challenges of the last couple of years, and you will need to draw on that resilience while job hunting.  Getting your foot on the first rung of the graduate labour market can be a challenge – you won’t be successful with every application you make or interview you attend.  That’s normal, failure is part of success – and that’s perfectly OK.  Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and keep going.  And remember, the Graduate Success Team are here to help you to make the best applications and give the best interviews and increase your chances of being successful.  Just drop us an email at
