The Sex Discrimination Act 1975 protects men and women from discrimination on the grounds of sex or marital status in education, work, training, and goods provision services. The Gender Recognition Act 2004 adds the Sex Discrimination law protection to those who are transgender, for more information on transgender policies, head to our Transgender page.
The Equality Act 2010 brought together lots of different legislations which protect a large variety of characteristics. This includes the Equal Pay act 1970, which protects men and women from different pay or working conditions based on their sex, Marriage and Civil partnership and discrimination on the grounds of pregnancy and maternity leave.
The university also respect and protect those who are Non-Binary, including but not restricted to, gender-fluid, demi-boy, demi-girl and androgynous. There are currently very limited legal protection but multiple campaign groups, including the Non-Binary Inclusion Project, are fighting to change this. The University strive to be all inclusive, including gender neutral toilets on campus.
Our Equality, Diversity Framework and Objectives outlines our work towards improving equality across all the protected characteristics. We monitor gender and report annually on progress in our Diversity Annual Reports.
We urge our staff and students to report sexism based discrimination so that we can continue to improve.
