Being physically active is important for maintaining good mental health because it can improve mood, reduce stress, and increase overall wellbeing. Regular physical activity helps the body release endorphins, which can reduce feelings of anxiety and depression while promoting relaxation. It can also improve sleep quality, boost self-confidence, and increase energy levels, making it easier to manage the demands of daily life.

Whether it involves walking, playing sports, going to the gym, or taking part in recreational activities, staying active supports both physical and mental health and contributes to a healthier, more balanced lifestyle. You don’t need to be highly active even short bursts of movement can support your wellbeing.

Small steps

  • Take a short walk around campus or through local parkland.

  • Use stairs instead of lifts

  • Try a quick stretch or 5–10 minute movement break between study sessions

Ideas

  • Join Staffs Uni Sports Centre or Students’ Union sports clubs

  • Attend fitness classes (e.g., yoga, spin, group sessions on campus)

  • Try local activities like walks or running clubs.
