It is illegal and unacceptable to behave in any discriminatory way against employees who intend to undergo gender reassignment, are undergoing the process or have done so in the past.
Gender Reassignment is one of the protected characteristics covered by the Equality Act 2010. Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Framework and accompanying objectives shows how we intend to promote equality regardless of a person’s gender identity or their current stage in their transition.
The University welcomes, supports and aims to represent people across any gender identity.
The Transgender Equality, Gender Identity, and Gender Re-assignment Policy was formally approved by the University in August 2018. It provides a framework and set out processes to ensure that Transgender people are treated with dignity and respect at the University and do not experience discrimination or bullying as a result of their Transgender status.
The University is a Stonewall Champion and took part in their Workplace Equality Index for the first time in 2014. We are currently awaiting feedback on our current submission to the 2019 Index. An LGBT+ inclusion action plan is in place and staff and students from across the University are working together to implement it and to identify other potential areas for action.
The Students' Union supports our LGBT+ Network. The LGBT+ Network influences positive proactive change within university policy. An example being our Transgender and Non-Binary policy on name change with Student Cards no longer requiring a deed poll and the provision of gender neutral toilets including in the LRV on Leek Road, Flaxman building - first, third and fourth floors, and the Beacon building – first, second and third floors.
If you identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans, part of the +, or if you are experiencing doubts or challenges regarding your orientation and or gender identity you can speak to someone in the LGBT+ Network.
The LGBT+ Network also run regular socials every week and organise events throughout the year. Check out the Student’s Union Website for upcoming events.
You can also talk to the Students' Union Advice Service or the University Counselling Service, based in the AccessAbility Centre (Trent Building), about anything to do with orientation and or gender.
If you experience or witness Transphobia or any form of LGBT+ harassment or bullying you can talk and as well as report it to your Tutor, Student Guidance Advisor or the Students' Union.
LGBT History Month takes place in February each year, celebrating the lives and achievements of the LGBT+ community. We take this time to reflect on both the positive steps taken, as well as using this, as another opportunity to challenge intolerance and injustices suffered by the LGBT+ community Globally.
In February 2013 Rico Paris from Gender Advisory Bureau came to talk about gender reassignment and transgender, sharing his personal experiences. The evening was supported by members of the Students' Union LGBT+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans) Society. During 2013 we were a corporate sponsor of the Gender Advisory Bureau whose aim is to improve the accessibility of mainstream services for trans people through trans equality training.
