We know that insect numbers are in decline so it’s really important that we do what we can to help wildlife thrive locally, especially in urban environments.

he popular Staffordshire Invertebrate Science Fair returns to the Science Centre on Saturday 2 March with a host of hands-on activities for all the family.

Now in its fifth year, the fair offers visitors the chance to try pond-dipping, identify insects under the microscope or taste honey from straight from a bee hive!

Senior Lecturer in Biology Dr Dave Skingsley, aka the “Bug Botherer”, has helped to organise the event along with Andy Jukes of the Staffordshire Invertebrate Group.

“We’re really excited to welcome the public back onto campus for our fifth annual fair! It is a fun day out for enquiring minds of any age to learn about our insect population and discover simple ways to help protect it.” explained Dave.

“We know that insect numbers are in decline so it’s really important that we do what we can to help wildlife thrive locally, especially in urban environments.”

A range of charities and societies will be on hand to offer help and advice including Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, Buglife and the Butterfly Conservation with expert talks throughout the day.

Other activities range from making seed bombs to help pollination, creating bumblebee hats and the authors of book ‘Little Worm’ will be back with fun and games and book readings.

The fair has also joined forces with the Children’s University which encourages 5-14 year olds to try new experiences, develop new interests and acquire new skills. Participating schoolchildren can 'travel' to educational locations with their Passport to Learning and the fair will count as one of these learning destinations.

Dave added: “Linking with the Children’s University is a great way to raise aspirations of youngsters in the area and will hopefully inspire budding biologists and their families!”

The Staffordshire Invertebrate Science Fair takes place on Saturday 2 March 2019 at 10:30am – 4pm, Science Centre, Staffordshire University, Leek Rd, Stoke-on-Trent, ST4 2DF. Free entry and parking on site.
