Sports therapy students at Staffordshire University are helping runners prepare for one of the biggest sporting events in the county’s calendar.

The Staffordshire University Sports Therapy (SUST) Clinic provides sports therapy and rehabilitation services to the public at reduced prices and has been offering free treatments in the run up to the Stafford Half Marathon this weekend.

At the clinic, students from the BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy course give assessments and treatments under the supervision of qualified therapists. Open five days a week, this provides vital hands-on experience for students and gives the public access to professional sports therapy at discounted rates.

The SUST Clinic also goes out into the community to support local events and students will be at the Stafford Half Marathon on Sunday 17 March to give runners free sports massages before and after the race.

Sports Therapy lecturer Hannah Strong, who helps to run the clinic, said: “Helping with events like the Stafford Half gives the public an opportunity to see what we can do and learn about the services that the clinic provides.

“You won’t get any offers cheaper anywhere else at any other clinics. Prices start at £10 which is really good value for money.”

Sports Therapy student Abbie Truman said: “It prepares us for when we graduate so we get a lot of hands on experience with massage, injury assessments, different kinds of treatments like ultrasound and electrotherapy.”

Coursemate Pandora Elcox added: “I think it’s good for the public because they have us there and they also have a supervisor there, so they get first class treatment. Then again, we get the experience as well so it’s the best for both of us.”
