Douglas Macmillan provide free hospice services to more than 3,500 people with life-limiting illness in Stoke-on-Trent, North Staffordshire, and surrounding areas.

Refurbishment works at the University’s Stafford campus to create its new Centre for Health Innovation meant some canteen furniture and library shelving had become redundant.

The University always prioritises reuse of furniture, however no suitable locations were found, and these items were destined for disposal.

Instead, they were donated to Dougie Mac, and their sale will help secure much needed funds for the Hospice, allowing the charity to continue to provide care for children, young adults, and adults in Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding areas.

Laura Rhodes, Sustainability Engineer at Staffordshire University, said: “At Staffordshire University, sustainability is a huge priority, and we are always trying to find alternatives to throwing away unused furniture and equipment.

“By donating the furniture to Dougie Mac, we are not only avoiding sending waste for incineration or landfill, but are also supporting a fantastic local charity who will benefit from the sale.

“Thank you to our porters, Paul Smith and Mike Barker, who disassembled and delivered the items to Dougie Mac, saving the charity both the time and expense of collecting them.”
