Computer Science graduate Kyle Ashbee had chance to travel the world during his placement year

I was able to travel the world. I was in New York for about five to six months, Hong Kong for two months, Germany for a month. It was an incredible experience!

Kyle Ashbee, BSc (Hons) Computer Science (Network Computing)

Originally from Sussex, Kyle Ashbee chose to study BSc (Hons) Computer Science (Network Computing) at Staffordshire University because of the course’s reputation, facilities and industry links.

The 24-year-old, who now lives in Shelton, explained: “Staffordshire University is one of the best for networks as a whole. We have Cisco modelling labs here and a lot of industry standard equipment. There's also industry qualifications funded by the University. It is probably one of the best in the whole of the UK.

“All the lecturers are absolutely incredible. From problems, to not understanding something, to just being there for a chat – they did everything.”

Accredited by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, the degree equips students with recognised certifications from Microsoft, Cisco and Amazon. Students also have chance to do a paid placement year working in industry.

Kyle spent his placement year working as a Network Engineer at Options Technology, based in Belfast, which only takes placement students from Staffordshire University.

“I was able to travel the world. I was in New York for about five to six months, Hong Kong for two months, Germany for a month. It was an incredible experience!

“You get to have that real world experience, which is why it's important to do a placement. I came back to university and I've graduated instantly with a job, mainly because of my placement.”

Kyle has secured a graduate role a as Solutions Engineer at Logicalis UK and will complete the MSc Computer Science (Computer Networks and Security) at Staffordshire University part-time alongside his new role.

“Computer networks is fundamental. It is the backbone of the internet, how we communicate, how we talk to each over digital communications. It's so important that it is secure, up-to-date and built properly. It is something that is going to be around for a long time and so the prospects are high with well-paying jobs.”

Kyle added: “To have a job before I graduate is incredible! I couldn't ask for anything more if I'm honest.”
