Originally from London, Charlotte Jacobs moved to Kidsgrove with her young son to study BA (Hons) English Literature and Creative Writing at Staffordshire University.
Charlotte, 31, explained: “I did my first year at a different university, but I wanted to move somewhere that gave me the full university experience. It's a very friendly and open university and a nice campus, so Staffordshire really fit the bill.
“I've had a spell living in Gloucestershire and obviously now I live up in Stoke-on-Trent. This is where I'm staying, I like it here! It's a very friendly place and I think that's something that sets it apart from the South.”
Taught by published writers and critics, the course helps students to develop their own literary style and learn how to get published. Students also get the chance to share their work through regular open mic nights and an active writerly community.
Charlotte used her experience of moving to Staffordshire in her work, producing a series of poems which were showcased at the University’s Degree Show and featured local landmarks including Trentham Gardens, Rudyard Lake and Parkhall Country Park.
“The lecturers are amazing. They've got such a wealth of knowledge and they just pour it all into their students. They're just so passionate about their subjects,” Charlotte said.
“I think the key element of English Literature and Creative Writing is that you're learning how to communicate with people in a wide variety of different ways. So, that could apply to any job.”
During her studies, Charlotte also had a short story published in Popshot Magazine, inspired by her mum who passed away. Having graduated with first class honours, Charlotte is now working as an events planner and is continuing to write alongside her job.
“When I got the email that said they had selected my short story for publication, I was screaming around the living room. It's amazing that my first published piece is to do with my mum, it’s very moving.”
Charlotte added: “Watch out, I’m writing my first novel! So hopefully I’ll have that published in the future as well.”
