Professor Lawrence Bellamy, Executive Dean at University of Staffordshire, joined students at Newcastle College yesterday as they collected their BTEC results.
This included Demi-Louise Williams who achieved a triple distinction in her Travel and Tourism BTEC at Newcastle College. The 18-year-old is now planning to study Forensic Investigation at University of Staffordshire.
Demi-Louise, from Longton, said: “I went to an open day at Staffs and a staff member took me round to see the custody suite, crime scene areas and the Hazmat suits. They didn’t have to do that – it was just for me. From then on, Staffs was where I wanted to go.
“I was in my element looking at the facilities. I was ‘whoa’. I learn better seeing it and doing it myself, so it really interested me.”
Adam Martin achieved a triple distinction in BTEC business at Newcastle College. He will be studying Business Management and Entrepreneurship at University of Staffordshire.
The 19-year-old, from Meir Park, said: “I’ve always had the idea of running my own business. I did business at GCSE level and it was my favourite subject by a mile. I really loved it.
“I’m looking forward to studying it at university. I looked around Staffs and I knew it was a good university. It was the best fit for me.”
Kacey Williams achieved a triple distinction in her BTEC Health and Social Care at Newcastle College. She is now planning to study Paramedic Science at University of Staffordshire.
The 18-year-old, from Silverdale, said: “I went round the university campus and saw the training ambulance. We had to get a dummy out safely, following all the procedures.
“On the course, you do so many weeks at uni and so many weeks on placement. If I was just stuck in a classroom, I would doubt myself. I learn better on the job.”
Demi Turner is heading to University of Staffordshire to take a Photography degree. She studied a BTEC in Photography at Newcastle College.
The 18-year-old, from Stone, said: “I just love the creativity with photography. For my BTEC, I was doing a bit of everything, including headshots and buildings. But in my spare time, I would go and do sports photography. I’ve got my own Instagram page for my photography.
“I’m looking forward to the course at university. I want to be self-employed for a career.”
Newcastle College classmates Jack McDonald and Jess Gimbert both achieved a triple distinction in BTEC Games Art, Concept Art and Animation. Now they are both heading to University of Staffordshire.
Nineteen-year-old Jack, from Sneyd Green, will be taking a degree in Games Art. He said: “I knew Staffs was the best for Games Art. I’ve seen the course modules and I like the idea of being able to do group projects. You can specialise as well. I want to go into environment art for games as a career.”
Meanwhile, Jess, will be studying Illustration at university. The 19-year-old, from Baddeley Green, said: “I would like to develop storytelling and work with characters. I went to look at the facilities at the university and went into the workshop. We got a little taster. I really enjoyed that.
“All the trips look really good as well. You can go to Amsterdam and it’s all very arty. I’m really looking forward to it.”
