Resuscitation Council research shows that around 80% of cardiac arrests happen in the home, but currently fewer than one in ten people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Giving high quality CPR and using an automated defibrillator can help to increase the chance of patient survival.

To mark ‘Restart A Heart’ day, healthcare experts from the University will deliver workshops next month on how to perform CPR – an emergency lifesaving procedure, performed when the heart stops beating.

The training is open to the public and will take place at the University’s Centre for Health Innovation in Stafford on Thursday 16 October 2025. School pupils from the local area are also being invited to take part and learn how to save a life.

‘Restart A Heart’ Day is an annual initiative, which aims to raise awareness of cardiac arrest and encourage everyone, everywhere, to be ready to help. This is the third year that University of Staffordshire has marked the occasion by offering free training.

All sessions, lasting two and half hours, comprise of an introductory talk ahead of hands-on practical training including basic life support, choking, use of an AED (automated external defibrillator) and paediatric life support.

Elizabeth Isaacson, Senior Lecturer in Paramedic Science at University of Staffordshire, said: "Resuscitation Council research shows that around 80% of cardiac arrests happen in the home, but currently fewer than one in ten people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Giving high quality CPR and using an automated defibrillator can help to increase the chance of patient survival.

“Acting quickly in those moments before emergency services arrive is crucial, which is why we’re helping our local community to learn these skills. We hope that providing education will empower more people to act in an emergency, which could save many more lives every year.”

Bookings are now open for the Restart A Heart Day training on Thursday 16 October 2025 at the Centre for Health Innovation, Blackheath Lane, Stafford.
