The course gave me a strong foundation in both creative thinking and practical skills. The support from tutors and encouragement to push ideas further have all been invaluable in preparing me for a creative career.

Kira Mawby was Highly Commended at the Creative Conscience Awards for her project Greenhouse Press – a concept for a paper company that creates papers from plants and explores new creative materials for designers and makers.

Addressing the theme ‘Conscious Consumption’, Kira’s winning entry is a collection of paper samples, packaged in biodegradable materials and designed to reduce waste. Featuring detailed lino-cut illustrations, storytelling plays a key role in the branding and identity.

Graphic Design student Molly Dean was also acknowledged in the competition for her project Good Grief, about helping people to navigate their journey through the grieving process.

Kira, 21 from Congleton, said: “It’s amazing, and I was so excited to hear the news. I’m proud of my project, so to be Highly Commended feels incredible, especially when there so many other interesting projects."

Creative Conscience is non-for-profit organisation that champions positive change through creative thinking and innovation. Judged by a panel of industry experts, its annual awards welcome exciting projects from students and graduates which tackle some of the most relevant issues that the world faces today.

Kira said: “I had a bit of an obsession with paper and its variety, so I decided to create a concept for a paper company, presented through a box of samples. Inspired by how paper companies use sample booklets, I wanted to design something colourful, playful, and sustainable.

“I focused on plant-based papers, and the illustrations drew on medieval manuscript design elements, incorporating legends, stories, and wordplay.”

Earlier this year, Kira was also recognised as one of D&AD New Blood 2025’s ‘Ones to Watch’ and won two prizes at the University’s own GradEX 2025 student exhibition.

“The course gave me a strong foundation in both creative thinking and practical skills,” Kira commented. “The support from tutors and encouragement to push ideas further have all been invaluable in preparing me for a creative career.”

She added: “I’m really interested in branding and packaging design, so I’m keeping an eye out for roles in that area. In the meantime, I’m continuing to draw and develop ideas and editing my portfolio.”
