Staffordshire experts are serving up a Pint of Science at the annual festival taking place this May
I’m very excited to once again be part of this wonderful opportunity to engage with the general public about scientific research. A pub provides a great informal environment to talk about the latest scientific findings and to chat about the real-world implications about what we find.
The festival is a chance for the general public to hear the latest discoveries, research and work from experts at Keele University and University of Staffordshire. Events will take place in May across three evenings at six venues in Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Crewe.
A total of seven events will take place from 7-9pm each evening with tickets now on sale at the Pint of Science website. It's part of a worldwide event bringing science to the masses in cafes, pubs and local venues around the world.
Two University of Staffordshire psychologists are joining the line-up for a second time after taking part last year.
Richard Cooke is a Professor of Health Psychology whose research focusses on alcohol consumption and the reasons why people drink. He’s inviting the public to take part in a unique pub quiz at The Quarter on Wednesday 21 May.
Richard said: “I enjoyed being part of Pint of Science 24 so much that I signed up for Pint of Science 25 as soon as I could. Last year’s event focused on discussing awareness of units in alcoholic drinks with me asking members of the audience to pour what they thought was a unit of alcohol. The event prompted some lively discussion about drinking and was great fun.
“This year I’m doing a pub quiz about alcohol with the help of my PhD student Emma Rouse. We’ll be asking the audience to answer questions about a range of drinking topics and seeing how much they know about alcohol. I can’t wait to take part!”
Dr David Gordon will talk about the idea of fairness and how it is demonstrated by those in power at Mellard’s in Newcastle-under-Lyme on Tuesday 20 May.

“Last year, I talked with the audience about spite and spitefulness, and this year I will be discussing the opposite – my work on fairness and fair behaviour. I’ll be talking about my research on the effect that collective action can have on the behaviour of powerful individuals and will be answering the question, is our individual idea of what is ‘fair’ just what we think we can get away with?”

- Who drinks, with whom, where, and why do they do it? takes place on Wednesday 21 May, 7-9pm, at The Quarter, Elenora Street, Spode Works, Stoke-on-Trent ST4 1QQ.
