Five inspirational figures will be honoured at University of Staffordshire Summer Awards 2026

These honorary graduates each embody the values we champion at University of Staffordshire – leadership, compassion, resilience and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world around them.

Professor Philip Plowden, Interim Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive

Representing fields as diverse as emergency services, education, community leadership, entrepreneurship and global human rights advocacy, the Class of 2026 honorary graduates have each made an outstanding contribution to society through service, innovation and leadership.

Recently retired Chief Fire Officer Rob Barber KFSM, educational leader Heather McLachlan, charity chief executive Lloyd Cooke, entrepreneur and alumnus Andrew Pear DL, and United Nations human rights expert Dr Muluka-Anne Miti will be recognised during the University's graduation ceremonies in July.

Interim Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Professor Philip Plowden said: “These honorary graduates each embody the values we champion at University of Staffordshire – leadership, compassion, resilience and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world around them.

“From supporting vulnerable communities and shaping the future of education, to driving entrepreneurial success and championing human rights on the global stage, their achievements are truly inspiring. We are proud to recognise their impact and celebrate them alongside our graduating Class of 2026.”

Rob Barber KFSM will receive the Award of Doctor of the University (Hon DUniv) in recognition of his distinguished service to the fire and rescue sector and his leadership at both local and national level. Rob dedicated almost three decades to Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, latterly as Chief Fire Officer, before retiring last month. He was awarded the King’s Fire Service Medal in 2024.

Heather McLachlan, Chief Executive Officer of the Potteries Educational Trust, will receive the Award of Doctor of Letters (Hon DLitt) for her outstanding contribution to education and her commitment to improving opportunities for young people across Stoke-on-Trent and the wider Midlands region.

Lloyd Cooke, who has led Stoke-on-Trent charity Saltbox for almost 38 years as its Chief Executive, will receive the Award of Doctor of Letters (Hon DLitt) in recognition of his tireless work supporting vulnerable communities and fostering collaboration across the public, voluntary and faith sectors.

Andrew Pear DL, an entrepreneur and University of Staffordshire alumnus, will receive the Award of Doctor of the University (Hon DUniv). Founder of Stoke-on-Trent-based Reliance Medical, a leading UK manufacturer and distributor of first aid and medical supplies, Andrew has grown the company while continuing to support education, entrepreneurship and community initiatives across the region.

Muluka-Anne Miti, United Nations Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by persons with albinism, will receive the Award of Doctor of Laws (Hon DLaws). An internationally respected human rights lawyer and advocate, she has played a significant role in advancing global awareness and protection for vulnerable communities facing discrimination and violence.
