The 42-year-old, from Stafford, is celebrating a BSc (Hons) Business Management (Events) after balancing her studies with family commitments, including supporting her husband who serves in the military.
Before coming to University, Clare worked in a variety of roles, including as a community care assistant, support worker and retail assistant. Although excited to begin a new chapter, Clare admits she initially questioned whether she would fit into university life.
"Three years ago, when I made the decision to return to education, I wasn't entirely sure I had made the right choice," Clare said. "Like many of us, I experienced moments of self-doubt. I wondered whether I would fit into student life, whether I belonged here and whether I could succeed.
"It didn't take long for those doubts to disappear. I found a community that was welcoming, supportive and encouraged every student to succeed in their own way. Success isn't measured only by grades; it's found in the opportunities we embrace, the friendships we build and the confidence we gain along the way."
Clare was also diagnosed with dyslexia during her studies, adding: “I can’t thank the Student Life enough for helping me to get my diagnosis and all the support that I was able to receive without my studies. I wouldn’t be graduating today without it.”
University of Staffordshire was recently named University of the Year at the Academic Employability Awards 2026 and ranked 7th in the UK for overall student positivity in Higher Education in the National Student Survey.
Determined to make the most of her experience, Clare immersed herself in campus life and made the most of opportunities offered at University of Staffordshire.
Alongside her studies, she completed placements, worked as a Student Ambassador, supported outreach and Open Day events, and gained valuable experience through UniTemps.
"Becoming a Student Ambassador is a role I will always be proud of. I had the privilege of meeting new students and sharing my experiences. I was also fortunate to volunteer at conferences and events, each one teaching me something new and giving me the chance to develop my skills."
A highlight of Clare's degree was travelling to India through the University's Go Abroad programme, where she joined fellow students and academic staff to learn about international business and culture.
"One of the greatest opportunities of all was travelling to India. We were welcomed with incredible warmth and hospitality. We met inspiring business professionals, visited a local school and university, and created memories that will stay with us forever."
Now graduating with first class honours, Clare has secured a role as an Executive Assistant at the University and hopes her story will encourage others who may be considering returning to education later in life.
She added: "I've learned that it's never too late to challenge yourself, embrace new opportunities and discover what you're capable of. University has given me confidence that will stay with me for the rest of my life."
