Anna-Marie Francis

Job Title and Responsibilities

Lecturer in Fine Art

Level leader with another fractional member of staff, overseeing and delivering all aspects of the level one fine art programme. I contribute to the teaching of the Studio Practice modules, and manage the Exhibiting and Curating in Fine Art module.

About me

I graduated from Staffordshire University with an MA in Fine Art in 2002. I went on to complete a P.G.C.E. (P.C.E.) in art at Oxford Brookes University. After which I spent a year in Tokyo. I returned to Staffordshire in 2005, and began teaching part time on the BA Fine Art alongside my career as an artist.

My arts practice examines private histories, public space and civic languages; using forms of intervention, mapping, performance, consultation and photography to investigate the impact of art and culture on the regeneration of cities.
In 2007 I initiated and curated ‘Indefinable City’ an exhibition at AirSpace Gallery, where I am a current studio artist and board member. The exhibition focused on the changing nature of cities in the context of globalisation.

I have exhibited widely across the UK and beyond and have project managed and designed various art platforms which provide opportunities for other artists to investigate the city as a site for exploration and development. These include Interrogation: Walsall in 2009 (during a one month residency at The New Art Gallery Walsall) and Interrogation: West Bromwich in 2010.

Other projects see me becoming invented characters in order to test the boundaries of the city and its situations. Within this I have variously become a dating agency director, a tour guide, a market researcher and an agony aunt to investigate the city.
