For new and current legal staff who wish to advance their careers.

Who is it for?

The Chartered Legal Executive Higher Apprenticeship is open to new and existing members of staff. There are two entry routes - those with a Level 2 qualification or equivalent experience study the standard programme. Candidates with a Law Degree follow a shorter programme.

What are the entry requirements?

Typical requirements are A-levels or Level 2 Diplomas. However candidates with experience but without academic qualifications may be eligible. The shorter route is available for Law graduates only. Graduates in other subjects seeking a career in Law may still be funded on the standard programme.

What qualification will be achieved?

Apprentices will be awarded Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx). In addition to the CILEx qualifications apprentices receive:

  • UCertificate of Continuous Professional Development in Law and Practice (Level 4)
  • University Certificate in Land, Criminal Obligations and Law (Level 4)
  • University Diploma in Law and Practice (Level 5)
  • Overall Apprenticeship Grade: Pass / Fail
  • How long is the apprenticeship?

The standard programme is 5 years but apprentices with an existing Law Degree follow a shorter 3 year course.

    When can you start?

Apprentices can enrol at any stage beginning with an introductory distance learning pack then join the blended learning programme in either September or Jan.

    When do they attend lessons?

The course consists of a short block of face-to-face learning, typically three days long, during each module. Apprentices then study online with interactive study materials and a weekly virtual workshop session through the University's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

    What happens in lessons?

The module launch is designed to provide apprentices with an overview of the module and its assessment. There will be a number of presentations, activities and the opportunity to get to know your tutors and other apprentices as well as a tour of the library and other university facilities.

    How is the Apprenticeship assessed?

The formal CILEx qualifications are assessed by examination. The University qualifications, which are studied alongside the CILEx units, are assessed with practical tasks including letter writing, presentations, drafting legal documents, legal research exercises and written assignments.

The work experience element is assessed by a portfolio covering case studies and a reflective journal.

    How much will it cost?

For levy paying organisations the apprenticeship is paid for from their digital account at a rate of £2400 per annum. For non-levy paying organisations the cost per year is £240.
