Our English language courses

If English isn’t your first language, don’t worry - this needn’t provide a barrier to your studies.

The English Language Team at Staffordshire University offers a range of English language courses.

These courses have been designed to help improve your confidence when communicating and assist you in achieving the academic and English language standards required to take some degrees.

Course Information

The Staffordshire University Pre-sessional Programmes are for international students who intend to study at the University on an under-graduate or post-graduate degree course, but who do not meet the language requirements for direct entry.

The course is designed to help you improve your English language and study skills, and prepare you for academic study and academic life in the UK.

The General English classes help you improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills to help you cope with everyday life in the UK. You will also develop your overall vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation whilst improving your potential IELTS score.

The Academic English sessions will help to prepare you for university study in the following areas:

  • Reading - You will learn and develop reading skills to help you identify and understand key parts of academic texts.

  • Writing - You will learn to write effective essays with appropriate introductions and conclusions. You will also improve your academic planning skills for essay writing.

  • Speaking - You will learn expressions and phrases to enable you to communicate effectively in various kinds of academic discussions. You will also develop your presentation skills.

  • Listening - You will learn to identify the main points in lectures, improve note-taking skills and absorb information more effectively.

  • Extended writing and research - You will learn how to develop a research assignment in an academic subject, including planning, researching, using the library, and writing a draft. You will learn how to paraphrase, make references and avoid plagiarism.

Assessment

Students will be assessed on reading, writing, speaking and listening at the end of the course.

Students who successfully pass the end of course examinations and who meet the course requirements in terms of attendance, can start their course at Staffordshire University.

Pre-sessional Intensive English

These short intensive support programmes are for students who need to develop their English language skills from UKVI IELTS 5.5 to UKVI IELTS 6.0. - the English language level required to study on a degree course at Staffordshire University.

Students will need a minimum of 5.0 in each component to join the Pre-sessional Intensive.

Students at the end of this course will be fully prepared for study at Staffordshire University. Study is classroom based. You will be asked to provide a 25% deposit towards your degree which follows your course.

Pre-Sessional Extensive English

This is an extensive support programme for students who need to develop their English language skills from UKVI IELTS 5.0 to UKVI IELTS 6.0. – the English language level required to study on a degree course at Staffordshire University.

Students will need an average of 5.0 with a minimum of 4.5 in each component to join the Pre-sessional Extensive

Students at the end of this course will be fully prepared for study at Staffordshire University. Study is classroom based.
