We're here for you if you come from a care background or have little or no family support to rely on. We’ve made a public commitment through the Stand Alone Pledge to support estranged students. We'll work with you throughout your studies and after you graduate to offer  support and guidance.

You can get support from us if you’re a UK undergraduate student who:

  • Has spent time in supported housing, foster care or been looked after by a local authority.
  • Is estranged from both of your parents (not in contact or able to rely on them).

Who is defined as a Care Leaver?

A young person under the age of 25 when they enrol onto a course at Staffs who:

  • Has spent at least 13 weeks in care (e.g. foster care or childrens home) since the age of 14 and were in care on their 16th birthday.

OR

  • Was privately fostered until the age of 16 or were ‘looked after’ until they were subject to a Special Guardianship Order.

If you’re not sure if this applies to you or are unsure what you may be eligible to, please contact the Student Life (Advice) team via the University's Solve portal - https://solve.staffs.ac.uk/portal

If you are unsure how to use Solve, please watch this short video explaining: How to submit a ticket with SOLVE

How will we support you?

Our support is designed to remove practical and systemic barriers that care‑experienced and estranged students face when accessing higher education.

Our goal is to help you succeed in your studies. We want to help you settle in and make the most of the many opportunities Staffs has to offer.

We support students who:

  • Don’t have financial support from family or a stable parental home.
  • Are learning to navigate care leaver support for the first time.
  • Need somewhere to live all year round.
  • Are making important life decisions on their own earlier than other students.

Our support package reflects our commitment to ensuring care‑experienced and estranged students are supported with the same ambition, stability and encouragement as any other student.

Before you start your studies

We offer proactive support earlier than standard student services because we recognise that care‑experienced and estranged applicants often need clarity and reassurance well before enrolment.

We’ll support you with:

  • The UCAS application process and advice during your transition to University.
  • Arranging on-campus accommodation for the whole year, including university holidays.
  • Who to contact for support with money, studying, disability, and more.

During your studies

We’ll provide you with:

Dedicated Advice

Starting university can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming at times. We understand that you may be facing challenges that are different from other students.

Our team is here to offer ongoing support and impartial advice. We can also connect you with other University services and external organisations to make sure you get the help you need throughout your time at Staffs.

Staff Lead

Kate Rowe (She/Her) is our named Care Experienced and Estranged Students Champion and staff lead.

Kate’s role is different from a general adviser because she is:

  • An advocate who understands local authority systems.
  • Someone who can liaise on a student’s behalf to support communication with other university services.
  • A consistent contact throughout your university journey.

Students will not need to repeatedly explain their circumstances and background - the Care‑Experienced Estranged Students Champion role ensures understanding, advocacy and joined‑up support from the outset.

Kate can be contacted by logging a request through our Solve portal.

To book an appointment with Kate's team, please contact the Student Life (Advice), via the University's Solve portal - https://solve.staffs.ac.uk/portal

If you are unsure how to use Solve, please watch this short video explaining: How to submit a ticket with SOLVE

If you ticked the box on your UCAS application or indicated during online enrolment you’re a care leaver or an estranged student, we will contact you via your student email account.

Student Finance Information on Estrangement 2025/2026:

If you have not done so already you need to complete a Confirmation of Estrangement Form to confirm that you’re irreconcilably estranged from your parent(s).  To be considered irreconcilably estranged from your parents, you won’t have had any written or verbal contact with either parent and this is unlikely to change. Usually, for a period of at least twelve months, but Student Finance will consider all cases.
