Question 1
Reply Staffordshire University does not have a policy covering the receipt of research funding from tobacco, alcohol and gaming industries. The University has, however, signed the UK Research Integrity Concordat and expects research associated with the University to be carried out by the highest standards of rigour and integrity. An extended Code highlighting good practice in the conduct and management of research is currently being prepared for University staff and students and should be published this Spring.

In addition, Staffordshire University has in place an Ethical Investment Policy which places an obligation on the Institution to operate in an ethical manner and to take account of social, environmental and ethical considerations in all activities including financial investments. The policy includes the following statement:

Stakeholders may draw attention to any of the Universitys investments that may be considered unethical. Examples include, but are not limited to:-
Support of unethical operations such as armament sales to military regimes, tobacco production or animal testing for purely cosmetic purposes.

To access the policy, open the link below:
URL

The University also has a Institutional Research Ethics Committee which sits outside Faculty management structures and is qualified to offer independent advice to members of staff who may have reservations over the terms, conditions attached to a particular research funding award.

A policy governing ethical fundraising is in the process of being developed and will be adopted by Staffordshire University.
Reply There is no record of the either Universitys Academic Board or Board of Governors discussing the ethics of accepting funds from tobacco, alcohol or gambling industry sources. However, the Universitys Development Board considered during late 2015 whether the Institution should accept funding from the Bet 365 Foundation (a charitable agency independent of the Bet365 company ) to provide bursaries to support undergraduate students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This funding was for student support rather than research.

Reply We normally follow the procedures set out by the grant awarding bodies and funding agencies for receiving and disbursing funds . As such we dont have Staffordshire University does not have a different criteria for determining the acceptance of funding from tobacco, alcohol or gambling industry sources.

As a HEI, the University has an obligation to conduct its fundraising operations in an ethical manner. Due diligence will be observed at all times when assessing whether or not to accept donations and funding.

Reply Please see reply to Question 2.

No - Staffordshire University observes recognised national and EU good practice in the receipt and disclosure of research funding.

While there is no immediate intention to review the Universitys position on the receipt of funding from the tobacco, alcohol or gambling industries, as part of our commitment to upholding the integrity of research, we map our processes and procedures against best national practice and will produce an action plan to address any gaps.

15 February 201614 March 201616 February 2016Apologies for taking up your valuable time but I wonder if you can assist? I am currently undertaking research into the terms and conditions of academic employment at universities in the UK and particular in changes over periods of time. Accordingly, I am seeking the model employment contracts for academic staff at all UK universities. I am not interested in salary information merely the standardised employment contracts for full time employed lecturers at each institution. Where contracts differ as between teaching only appointments and teaching and research appointments I am looking for both.
I would be very grateful if you could forward to me your standardized contracts from your respective HR departments.

I would also like to enquire as to whether each institution has changed its employment contracts in the course of the last 5 years and if so like to request a copy of the contract issued to the aforementioned staff prior to its amendment.
