11 February 201710 March 20178 March 2017Re: The criteria for academic staff being promoted to Professors on the basis of learning and teaching.

I am currently working on a level 7 Masters university project reearching the current state of promotion and progression un the UK Higher Education system.
In particular, I am investigating Professors of Learning and Teaching in the UK and various criteria that need to be met for academic members of staff to progress to this level.

I would like to request some raw data from you as well as brief answers to the foliowing questions:

1) Could you please send me a copy of your institution's criteria used to determine a lecturer's suitability to become a Professor of Learning and Teaching?

2) How many known lecturers in numbers on your database have progressed to the role of a Professor based solely on their learning and teaching excellence based on your institutions criteria?

3) How many known Professors in numbers do you have who have been promoted to the Professorial level based solely on their research excellence based on your institutions's criteria?

4) Can I please have a list of the all the current Professors in your institution and where they gained the Professorship from if known?

5) Of these Professors, what is their Professorship in and what route did they take to get to that position i.e. Their individuals' full career paths/routes they took to obtain their Professorships?
- The University does not award Professorships solely for teaching and learning excellence. Under the revised guidelines, candidates for a professorship have to be outstanding or excellent under 2 of the following 3:
1) Reasearch and Knowledge Transfer
2) Teaching Excellence
3) Academic Leadership and Professional Citizenship
It is not possible under our criteria to be awarded a professorship solely for teaching excellence.

- Once again, it is not possible under Staffordshire University to be awarded a professorship solely on the basis of research excellence. Most applicants apply on the basis of research excellence and either teaching excellence or academic leadership and professional citizenship.

Please see list of professors and associate professors attached. As the title professors is not transferable between universities, all the professrs listed secured their titles at Staffordshire University.

23 February 201723 March 201728 February 2017What is the University's policy on its students purchasing essays/dissertations and handing them in as their own piece of academic work?

In each of the last 4 years (2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017) how many students have been caught handing in purchased essays/dissertations?

For each incident, how was the student punished?

Does the university have preventive measures in place to tackle this issue?
Staffordshire University defines the practise or purchasing an essay as commissioning. The University policy as attached relates to commissioning.

The University recordsits academic misconduct in terms of the seriousness of the offence (minor, major or gross), rather than the specific type of offence such as plagiarism or commissioning. However, from 2015/2016 academic year the university did start to record this information. University data shows that since thsi time no students have been subject to a proven case of commissioning.

The penalties as apply to any instance of academic misconduct are defined in section 3.5-3.7.

Staffordshire University provides study skills tuition to all new undergraduate students at the outset of their programmes, clearly advising on how to avoid offences of academic misconduct. A Blackboard based training module has been devised and is mandatory for any student having been found guilty of an offence. This is aimed at avoiding repeat offences. Both the University and the Students' union have created guides to academic misconduct which are available to all students online.
