First activity
Design:
If you want to go down the primary designer role, we'd recommend looking at the Mechanics Analysis task. Create a slide that looks at a mechanic from a game that you know fairly well, and talk about how it's used within that game.
Use the prompts on the template slide and the example provided for some talking points and things to look out for. This is a great way to get you thinking about some of the more theoretical points of game design and provide a good starting point for the year.
Tech:
If you're more interested in the technical/scripting side of development, look at the Reverse Engineering task. Similar to the design task, this task will have you look at an existing game and break down a mechanic from it.
However with this task, you'll be thinking more about how it actually works behind the scenes. Look at the template and example slides for some inspiration and points of reference. If scripting is for you, reverse engineering is a core skill that you'll be doing a lot.
Art:
If art is your thing, the Meet the Artist task will be the one for you. Follow the template through and show off your skills a bit, show off your inspirations, favourite practices/mediums, and generally introduce yourself a bit more.
This is a great way to flex your artistic ability a bit while showing off your personal style. Check out an example from our very own Maddy Reynolds for some inspiration and reference.
