Successful students will achieve a BSc (Hons) Degree.

The award aims to enrich the following skills;

  • Advanced digital film production, lighting and sound
  • Advanced digital post-production
  • Film marketing, exhibition and self-promotion
  • Research project and practical piece of your choice

On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: BSc (Hons) Film and Television Production Technology

Course content

Much of the learning is 'hands-on' with students working on independent and collaborative film projects, including the production of a 72 hour feature film, which will premiere at a Lichfield venue. Practical projects are underpinned by advanced research relevant to individual career aspirations.

Students will refine their skills in cinematography, directing, scriptwriting, audio production, lighting, animation and post-production - choosing which production roles they want to develop further. Students will become proficient in Adobe Premiere, After Effects and Photoshop.

Students can also focus on developing the skills and portfolio required for a career as a Producer, Production Manager, Art Director, Location Manager or 1st Assistant Director. Explore Hollywood film development, marketing and exhibition practices to understand the lucrative tricks of the trade used by the major film studios.

The final research project and digital film is based on a specific topic of your choice; giving you the opportunity to develop expert knowledge and practical skills directly relevant to your chosen career.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching

The BSc (Hons) Top-Up Degree in Film and Television Production Technology is highly practical with a strong academic underpinning. You will be taught through a combination of lectures, workshops, practical filmmaking tasks and regular meetings with your supervisor. Classwork will include production meetings, project work and independent research.

Self-directed study aims to build on and develop the knowledge and skills learnt in class. This is equally relevant to individual and collaborative projects.

Learning will be supported by a range of Microsoft and Adobe applications, as well as a range of educational resources for you to access on Teams.

Teaching will support the development of essential transferable skills, including self-promotion, presenting, leadership, IT, communication and team working.

Assessment

Assessments are designed to be interesting, relevant and contemporary, with the aim of enhancing personal and professional development, while also evaluating performance.

Each module normally includes practice or ‘formative’ assessments, for which you receive feedback from your tutor. Practice assessments are developmental to help students understand how to improve their work, as well as offering the opportunity to discuss progress. There is a formal or ‘summative’ assessment at the end of each module.

Module assessments such as practical films, pitch presentations and advanced post-production projects require learners to demonstrate a critical understanding of technical and theoretical concepts of film and television production.

In the case of collaborative projects, where students will be working in teams, peer assessments will support tutor observation reports to determine an individual's contribution to the production of the final project.

Feedback

Regular informal feedback is supportive and helps to develop students' practical filmmaking and academic skills by encouraging reflection and an understanding of how to improve further.

Written assessment feedback is provided within 20 working days of the submission date for each module.
