What is a foundation year?

A foundation year is a one-year course designed to prepare students that have the ability to study for a typical bachelor’s degree but don’t have the qualifications to enter the course directly.

Our foundation years are integrated into typical bachelor’s degrees, meaning you will study for a total of four years (or five years if you choose to complete a placement year).

Why choose a foundation year?

• Foundation years are a direct pathway into higher education for students from non-traditional educational backgrounds and under-represented groups.
• Foundation years include modules designed to develop your academic study skills, as well as teaching course-relevant subjects.
• Depending on the nature of your chosen subject, you’ll practice traditional learning methods, including lectures, tutorials, seminars and workshops, laboratory sessions, self-study and online learning in preparation for your degree.
