6 August 20184 September 201820 September 2018Dear Staffordshire University,

Hello,

Could you please outline the measures you have in place to support students who seek help with the problem gambling?

Please specify the number of times the university has been contacted by students who seek support or advice for gambling in 2017-18, 2015-16, 2014-15, 2013-14 (with an annual breakdown and gender breakdown of the pupil)
Dear Sir/Madam,

Further to your request for information we have not as a matter of course recorded gambling as a category within our services. We are intending to create as a sub-category into the 2018/19 academic year but are unable to provide reliable figures in this instance.

Whilst not being able to provide an exact figure our Counselling and Wellbeing services do occasionally see students who are experiencing problems in relation to this. Practitioners provide therapeutic support in relation to this as well as sign post to appropriate services outside of the University - see: URL

8 August 20186 September 201824 August 2018Dear whom it may concern,

I'm working on a story about universities and mental health, specifically how some students have been pressured into taking a deferral year from their studies because their institution says it lacks the resources to support them. I'm looking at a wide range of universities across the country for this story, not just this institution.

My request for information under the FOIA is as follows:

Would like to know how many students from your university have deferred their studies/taken a leave of absence on health AND/OR personal grounds:

-AND if you hold information for BOTH categories
-OR if you only hold information for ONE of these categories
- if collecting data for BOTH categories would exceed time and cost limits, please only provide information for health grounds.

I would like this data for the past 5 years, showing whether there has been an increase or decrease during this time.

This includes both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

I class a leave of absence from university on health/personal grounds as any time more than three months in duration, and especially those who defer to the next academic year (eg leaving in first semester untl the first semester of the following academic year). I would also like the figures to include those who don't return.

If you could distinguisj between (1) those who return within the same academic year beyond three months, (2) those who return the next academic year and (3) those who don't return, that would be helpful. But if it exceeds cost/time limit then don't worry.

I cannot pay any additional fee for this information so it must stay within the cost and time limit.
Dear Sir/Madam,

Further to your request for information please see our response below.

Please see the below data of intermitting students for the past 5 academic years:

2013/14
8 - Health reasons
74 - Other personal reasons

2014/15
138 - Health reasons
651 - Other personal reasons

2015/16
178 - Health reasons
420 - Other personal reasons

2016/17
166 - Health reasons
288 - Other personal reasons

2017/18
176 - Health reasons
271 - Other personal reasons

Please note that data from 13/14 academic year is significantly different as there is a very high proportion of intermitting students with the leave reason missing from on their record.

Due to the way that we record the data we cannot confirm when the students either returned to their studies or withdraw from their award so we are unable to provide a response to the following:-

If you could distinguish between (1) those who return within the same academic year beyond three months, (2) those who return the next academic year and (3) those who don't return, that would be helpful. But if it exceeds cost/time limit then don't worry.

Regards,

Staffordshire University
