What is a Placement?

The term ‘Placement’ is used to describe a range of different types of work. This can be anything from short microplacements lasting a week or two, to Placement Year roles lasting 12 months. A one-year placement forms part of your degree programme between your second and third year of studying for a minimum of 26 weeks.

Placements offer you a range of key benefits which make you graduate-market ready.

Enhance your skillset and work experience

Learn transferable skills needed to excel in your chosen career after you graduate

Apply your academic knowledge in practice

Gain valuable insight into the way real businesses work and make your mark in industry

Add weight to your CV and build your network

Gaining experience through a placement will provide you with real working examples for future interviews

The experience at Airbus was invaluable

My placement was a year with Airbus in Bavaria, Germany. I worked in the department that developed software for application in military aircraft. I really enjoyed my time there. I worked with some of the best in the business, and because it is an international company I worked with many people from across the globe. The experience was invaluable and was certainly my favourite year being a student.

We provide structured, part-time internship opportunities, funded through the Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEFI) grant. You’ll gain valuable professional experience and earn an income at the same time.

Summer Internships (Graduate Project Officers)

Between August and September, we offer unemployed or underemployed recent graduates (usually those who graduated in the previous summer) access to a seven-week placement. It involves 140 hours of paid work. Interns are employed on a range of internal projects across academic schools and professional services within University of Staffordshire. The aim is to develop skills and strengthen CVs.
