Step Up to Policing is a flexible distance learning course for those who want to pursue a policing career but don’t yet meet the entry requirements of the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship programme.
This course will help you to develop key academic skills and has been specifically designed for pre-degree learners who wish to progress onto a policing degree programme here at the University of Staffordshire. You will require Mathematics and English level 2 (such as GCSE 4/C and above, Functional Skills, Key Skills etc.) prior to starting on the course.
What if I cannot get the time off work to attend the sessions?
Although attending the live sessions is recommended, the course has been designed to offer maximum flexibility and each session is recorded. If you cannot make a live session, the recordings will give you the opportunity to watch and learn around your working hours.
I have no prior policing knowledge
The course is aimed at developing your academic skills in preparation for university study. No prior policing knowledge or experience is needed as the course introduces some of the basic policing topics, whilst teaching you how to produce academic work.
Do I have to have already applied to the force to start on Step up to policing?
All routes into policing require a level 3 qualification prior to starting. We recommend you speak with your chosen force first to confirm that you will be completing the Step up to Policing course, however this is not essential. You can complete prior to starting you police application.
Will I need to come to the University for Staffordshire for the live sessions?
This course is a distance learning course. All sessions are delivered online through MS teams. Once you are enrolled you will be given an IT package to include Microsoft office 365.
What equipment will I need?
