The New Psychology of Leadership and Team Dynamics


The New Psychology of Leadership and Team Dynamics workshop is designed to provide participants with a deep understanding of the intricate psychology behind effective leadership and team dynamics. Led by renowned experts, Professor Matt Slater and Paul Mansell, this session will equip you with invaluable insights and practical skills to build strong teams that thrive in today's dynamic business landscape.


Course Overview

This workshop will cover:

  • The psychology of leadership and team dynamics.
  • Examples of excellent and suitable leadership.
  • The importance of a “we” and “us” culture rather than an “I” and “me” culture.
  • The skills that will develop your leadership and create a sense of togetherness in your organisation.
  • Pressure and how it can be harnessed to lead well under pressure.
  • Reading materials on the new psychology of leadership, including accessible content via blogs, and online resources such as podcasts.


The workshop's content will be informed by a decade of our own academic research and practice with colleagues across the globe on the new psychology of leadership and team dynamics, and Matt’s book: Togetherness: How to Build a Winning Team (2019).

  • The knowledge is delivered by industry experts with extensive academic research and practical experience in the field of leadership and team dynamics.



On completion of this workshop, learners will receive a Certificate of Attendance.



The Stoke-on-Trent Higher Skills Accelerator is fully funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent Council and offered free of charge to each participating organisation.

Entry requirements

This masterclass is open to anyone who is 18 years old and over and meets the following criteria:

  • Employed for one hour or more of paid work per week (including those temporarily away from work because they are sick or on holiday).
  • Temporary and permanent employees who are on fixed-term contracts or agency temping.
  • Self-employed people.
  • People on government-supported training programmes, engaging in any form of work, work experience, or work-related training.
  • People on maternity or paternity leave.


This course is free to all learners who meet the criteria above.

Matt is a Professor of Sport and Exercise Psychology and recognised as an internationally leading scholar on the psychology of leadership and group dynamics.

I am a Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology here at Staffordshire University. My research areas include stress mindset, Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT), stress appraisals, psychological wellbeing, and athletic performance.
