Why did you decide to study your postgraduate degree at Staffordshire?

I was primarily drawn to University of Staffordshire by its impressive reputation for innovation. The 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) results, which classified 68% of the university’s research as ‘Internationally Excellent’ or ‘World Leading,’ were a significant factor in my decision.

As someone with a keen interest in research, I wanted to be part of an institution that prioritises high-impact discovery. Additionally, the university offers excellent value for money, providing a world-class education at an accessible price point.

I thoroughly enjoyed the supportive environment created by my professors. They encouraged us to work in teams, which was a fantastic way to prepare for the collaborative nature of the cybersecurity industry. Beyond the classroom, I made the most of the university’s extracurricular offerings.

Joining the Karate club was a great way to stay fit and disciplined, and the campus gym facilities provided the perfect outlet to recharge after a day of research.

How did your course prepare you for real-world challenges or industry practice in your field?

The Penetration Testing module was particularly instrumental in preparing me for the industry, as it provided a rigorous and realistic look into the challenges faced by security professionals.

This hands-on experience inspired me to establish my own home laboratory post-graduation to continuously refine my technical skills. Developing this level of practical proficiency has been invaluable as I pursue a career as a Cybersecurity Analyst, where staying ahead of evolving threats is essential.

How did your lecturers or supervisors support and inspire you during your studies?

The lecturers were exceptionally approachable and maintained an open-door policy that encouraged inquiry. They excelled at fostering an interactive learning environment, ensuring that every student felt empowered to contribute to class discussions.

This collaborative approach not only made complex topics more accessible but also allowed us to learn from the diverse perspectives of our peers.

What skills or experiences from your course have made the biggest difference in your career or personal growth?

The practical expertise I gained in penetration testing has had a profound impact on my professional development. The curriculum provided the foundational knowledge that enabled me to establish a sophisticated home laboratory using VMware and Kali Linux.

This environment allows me to continuously refine the techniques I learned during my studies and conduct independent research into emerging threats, ensuring my skills remain current in a fast-evolving industry.

What are you doing now, and how did your degree help you get there?

I am currently working as an IT Support Engineer. The comprehensive technical knowledge I acquired while studying at Staffordshire University was instrumental in my career journey.

My degree gave me the professional confidence to pursue competitive roles, and the curriculum ensured I was thoroughly prepared for the technical demands of the interview process. Having a postgraduate background in cybersecurity allows me to bring a security-focused perspective to my support role, which is a significant asset in today’s digital environment.

What impact do you hope to make through your work?

I aim to contribute to a safer digital future by combining technical expertise with public education. Beyond my professional role, I am dedicated to raising awareness about information security through my blog, where I write about emerging cybersecurity threats and practical preventive measures.

By making complex security concepts accessible to a wider audience, I hope to empower individuals and organizations to protect themselves in an increasingly digital world.
