Our English language courses

If you’ve applied for a course at Staffordshire University but haven't fully met our English language requirements, you may be eligible to study a pre-sessional English course.

By taking this course you’ll:

  • Improve your academic English
  • Develop study skills
  • Build your confidence
  • Learn about British education and culture

On successful completion of the course, you’ll have the confidence to undertake your studies at Staffordshire University without the need to take any further English language tests.

The benefits

You’ll attend the course at our Stoke-on-Trent campus giving you the opportunity to get to know the University. You’ll also meet other students starting their journey at Staffordshire University. The course is run by our own, fully qualified, English language team. Small class sizes ensure you’ll have plenty of individual time with a dedicated tutor and teaching hours are typically 20 hours per week.

Entry requirements

We offer a range of pre-sessional English courses dependent on your current level of English language.

In order to join the pre-sessional course, you must:

  • Have completed a Secure English Language Test (SELT). For a full list of SELT qualifications, please see the guidance on approved English language tests from gov.uk.
  • Be eligible for or have an offer on a main course of study at Staffordshire University. For more information, see our instructions on how to apply.

Our pre-sessional courses will equip you with English language skills equivalent to CEFR level B2 (or IELTS 6.0) which meets the requirement for most of our undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses. To find out the precise English language requirement for your course, please check the individual course pages or contact our International Admission team (int-admissions@staffs.ac.uk).

Please apply by emailing our International Admission team (int-admissions@staffs.ac.uk). You’ll need to include the following information in the email:

  • Your student reference number – you'll find this at the top of your offer letter
  • UKVI IELTS certificate

How to pay

You’ll pay for your pre-sessional English course in full at the same time you pay your deposit for your main degree course. For more information, see our instructions on how to apply.

Single visa application

*Where possible, we’ll aim to provide a joint Confirmation of Acceptance (CAS) to cover your pre-sessional course and your degree course. Please see the tables above to see if your pre-sessional course may be eligible for a single CAS. We’ll only be able to issue a single CAS if the pre-sessional English course is the only outstanding requirement on your Conditional Offer.

Unfortunately, if you do not successfully complete the pre-sessional course, we may be unable to continue sponsorship for your main award.
