Studying Cloud and Network Computing

Introducing your course leader, Stephen Cahill

Hi, I’m Stephen Cahill and I’m the course leader for the BSc (Hons) Cloud and Network Computing course.

I primarily teach Networks and Infrastructure modules, combining theory, hands-on implementation, and industry-recognised certifications to ensure you gain both technical expertise and practical skills.

Outside of teaching, I’m passionate about Cadet Forces volunteering, motorsports, and sim racing, as well as video and tabletop gaming - so there’s always something to chat about beyond the classroom!

I look forward to welcoming you to University of Staffordshire and supporting you in developing the skills needed for a career in cloud and network computing.

Join the Staffordshire Computing Society

Get involved in our vibrant student community by joining the Staffordshire Computing Society. Participate in events like Hash and Seek, hackathons, and industry talks to enhance your skills and network with fellow students interested in computing and related fields.

Hashing & Seek

The society recently organised an exciting workshop on hashing and encryption. The session broke down complex concepts into simple, hands-on lessons, making learning interactive and approachable. The highlight of the event was a thrilling treasure hunt where students used their new-found hashing skills to solve challenges and win prizes.

Insights from Jake Lomas, MDR Analyst at CrowdStrike

Jake Lomas, an MDR analyst at CrowdStrike's Falcon Complete team, recently shared his expertise on various aspects of cyber security during a guest lecture.

Jake explained CrowdStrike's cloud-native security solutions and their extensive range of services, including incident response and cyber threat intelligence. He emphasised the importance of understanding adversaries, who often include nation-states, e-crime groups, and hacktivists, highlighting the human element in cyber threats.

Jake highlighted the broad spectrum of companies CrowdStrike protects, ranging from small businesses to Fortune 100 companies, and he touched on the rise of identity-based attacks and cloud exploitation, noting the increasing sophistication of adversaries. He provided examples of living off the land binaries (LOLBins), which adversaries use to perform malicious actions without downloading malware.

As a computing student at University of Staffordshire, you'll have the opportunity to learn from industry experts like Jake Lomas and gain valuable insights into the computing industry. Our strong industry partnerships and cutting-edge curriculum will prepare you for a successful career in this dynamic field.

We look forward to welcoming you to our community and supporting you in your academic and professional journey!
