Paul O'Leary

My practice combines artistic, educational and research-based approaches to examine the relationship between people, place and cultural identity. Through long-term photographic projects, I explore how communities, landscapes and histories contribute to contemporary understandings of belonging, memory and civic life, with a particular interest in post-industrial environments and social transformation. My work has been presented in numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally and is represented in both public and private collections.

Alongside my creative practice, I have extensive experience in higher education, curriculum development and creative leadership. Working closely with photographers, arts organisations, cultural institutions and industry partners, I develop opportunities that connect students with contemporary photographic practice through professional collaborations, workshops, mentoring and public engagement activities.

A significant aspect of my work involves building international networks and partnerships that support creative exchange, research collaboration and interdisciplinary projects. Through these connections across Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania, I contribute to initiatives that examine photography's capacity to document and interpret changing social, cultural and geographic landscapes.

I am also committed to fostering critical and creative photographic communities, supporting emerging practitioners and encouraging dialogue around the social, cultural and political dimensions of image-making. My work seeks to demonstrate how photography can function not only as a means of visual expression, but also as a tool for research, participation and public engagement.
