BA (Hons) Fine Art

Introduction

Your portfolio review will be conducted on our video interviewing platform, Shortlister. You will receive an email from us if you have been selected for interview and then you will hear from Shortlister with your log in information.

Once you have received your invitation for a review, you will be sent a log in to Shortlister. Once logged in, you will find a lobby area with a few tips on how to navigate around the platform, a practise area where you can try out answering a few questions, test sharing your screen if required and to build your confidence.

Please note that this interview will require you to share a portfolio and therefore you will need to access this via a laptop or PC.

Please note that the first question will always ask for a form of ID to be shown to the camera. This must be photo ID (a passport, driving license – full or provisional, or a college ID card).

What to include in your Portfolio

The BA (Hons) Fine Art course at University of Staffordshire is a practical course, so as part of the selection process we would like to see some of the work that you have already made either during your studies in an Art and Design subject and/or you have made in your own time.  Some idea of what to include:

A range of different artworks or projects

  • We want to see the breadth of your ability, so please be sure to include examples in as many different media as you can. This could include works in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, digital media, moving image, performance art, site-specific work, installation.  We’d like to see works that have been set as projects on your current or previous course, and also self-initiated work that you have made independently.

 Evidence of development

  • We are interested in seeing how a body of work develops from the beginning, through your experiments in the early stages, and on to completion. If you have project work from your BTEC, A Level or Foundation course, please provide images of how the work developed from early observations and sketches to finished pieces.

 Visual research

  • Include some scans or photos of your best sketchbook pages, so we can get a sense of how your ideas develop, what inspires you, which artists you are most interested in, and which exhibitions and galleries you have visited.

The Review

To ensure every candidate has the same opportunity to highlight their key achievements, skills, and experiences we publish our interview questions. The questions are:

  1. Please show a form of ID (please note this must be photo ID)

  1. Tell me about your most successful piece of work (Sharing)

  1. What do you see yourself doing 2 years after graduation?

  1. Tell me about an artist that inspires you? How and where have you seen their work?

  1. Can you describe what is distinctive about the course you have applied for, compared to other subjects?

  1. Tell us about what you wish to address through your work? This could include the contexts, themes or subject matter that you are interested in exploring.
