Course content

The Construction Management course is delivered by Stoke-on-Trent College and leads to a University of Staffordshire qualification. You will gain experience in realistic working environments and will also complete project-based work.

Students learn the fundamentals of construction technology, including the use of renewable systems, and explore essential issues such as ethics, safety and risk.

You can tailor your studies to the area that most interests you, with the option of taking one of the following specialist pathways:

  • Construction design and build technician – ideal for aspiring design managers, contracts managers or construction managers. You’ll cover construction methods, architectural design, legal aspects, surveying and inspection.
  • Quantity surveying technician – geared to students who want to become assistant quantity surveyors, construction surveyors or cost engineers. You’ll learn how to monitor and control costs and contracts on construction projects.
  • Site supervisor – for prospective assistant site managers, assistant supervisors or construction site supervisors. You’ll look at supervising contracts, health and safety standards, quality control and reducing environmental impact.

Whichever route you choose, you’ll benefit from lots of support and will be taught by staff with a wealth of specialist knowledge and research-informed practice.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching

A substantial variety and range of teaching and learning strategies are used on this award. These take the form of practical, and theory based attended sessions, directed study, realistic working environment experience, remote delivery of learning material, problem solving, working with peers, including taking on a leadership role where required, in group activities with common goals, working with people in industry, giving presentations, being interviewed, report writing, industrial visits and guest speakers.

This variety of methods is designed to encourage the student to become an independent learner, taking control and responsibility of individual and collective time management needs, so that the student can continue to increase their knowledge even after they finish the course (and thus contributes to their employability).

Assessment

All assessment mechanisms will focus, wherever possible, on integrating practical and theoretical methodologies to ensure that students can demonstrate their technical skills by way of showcasing their knowledge and understanding of the attendant theory whilst incorporating professional standards and behaviours.
