The module focuses on developing and evaluating knowledge and skills essential for effective leadership, reflecting contemporary leadership policy and practice. The key theme will be gaining an understanding of leadership principles within the health and care context, and how these can be applied to address challenges across all levels of activity.
The module will include a review and critique of various approaches to leadership, recent developments in the NHS and associated topics such as leading change, ethics, power and organisational culture. Students will be expected to identify a ‘leadership challenge’ within their area of work as a focus for their module assignment.
This module is for healthcare practitioners who wish to develop their leadership skills and improve their own practice and healthcare team.
The module will be delivered using a variety of methods and approaches, including half-day teaching sessions over a 12 weeks period (lead and keynote lectures), together with group tutorials, blended learning (Blackboard) and independent study. Students will be expected to prepare a 30-minute ‘Powerpoint’ presentation on their work-related leadership challenge as their assignment for the module.
