Benjamin Hallam

Since qualifying in Paramedic Science at Coventry University in 2008, I have developed my career through a combination of clinical practice, education, and a commitment to lifelong learning. As a registered paramedic and member of the Royal College of Paramedics, I began my career in pre-hospital emergency care in Warwickshire before progressing to Advanced Paramedic practice in 2011. These early experiences reinforced the importance of continuous development and provided opportunities to expand both my clinical expertise and professional confidence.

I subsequently progressed through a range of roles within West Midlands Ambulance Service, including Rapid Response Paramedic and Clinical Team Mentor. Each position brought new challenges and learning opportunities, strengthening my ability to support patients, colleagues, and learners while maintaining a commitment to ongoing professional growth.

In 2015, I joined the University of Staffordshire as a Lecturer in Paramedic Science, marking the beginning of a rewarding career in higher education. Throughout this transition, I embraced opportunities to develop as an educator, achieving a distinction in my Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Professional Education, becoming a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. These experiences deepened my understanding of teaching and learning and reinforced my belief that growth comes from embracing new challenges.

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, I returned to frontline clinical practice as an Emergency Care Practitioner within a busy emergency department. Working in such a demanding environment highlighted the importance of adaptability, resilience, and reflective practice in healthcare. During this period, I also completed a BSc in Emergency Practice, further broadening my clinical knowledge before returning to academia in 2022 as a Senior Lecturer in Paramedic Science.

Today, alongside my teaching responsibilities across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, I continue to develop professionally through scholarship, professional recognition, and doctoral study. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators, a Fellow of the Association of Higher Education Professionals, and a Fellow of the Society for Education and Training. I am also currently undertaking a PhD, reflecting my ongoing commitment to learning and professional development.

As an educator, my aim is to support students in developing both confidence and competence as healthcare professionals. I strongly believe in a growth mindset, where challenges are viewed as opportunities to learn, develop, and improve. Learning is rarely a straightforward journey, but through effort, reflection, and perseverance, significant progress can be achieved.

My role is to guide and support you throughout that journey, providing constructive feedback, encouragement, and opportunities to stretch your abilities in a safe and supportive environment. With a Master's degree in Education and extensive clinical and academic experience, I am committed to helping you achieve your potential and develop into the best healthcare professional you can be.
